The Heat-Treatment Condition
17-4 PH is chosen for shafts, pins and valve components that need high strength with corrosion resistance. The grade name alone does not define the properties you are buying.
| Condition | Main consideration |
|---|---|
| Condition A | Material for further processing and aging |
| H900 | Higher strength and hardness |
| H1150 | Greater toughness with lower strength than H900 |
At Dexter Steel, we treat the required condition as part of the quotation. It affects the material supplied and the work remaining in your shop.
Decide Where Aging Fits into Production
Machining before aging can make heavy material removal easier. Close-tolerance parts may then need final finishing after heat treatment.
Pre-aged bar can remove an aging step from the buyer’s production route, but its hardness changes machining effort. The better option depends on the part’s dimensions, tolerance and available heat-treatment facilities.
For a replacement component, matching the grade while overlooking the condition can produce a different result. The drawing should define both.
Use Its Strength Where It Adds Value
17-4 PH can suit compact, heavily loaded components where general stainless grades offer insufficient strength.
Its corrosion resistance still needs a separate check. It is not a direct substitute for 316 in demanding chloride service.
Your load requirements, working environment and final heat-treatment condition help us define a useful supply specification.
