2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Bar

Where both corrosion resistance and mechanical strength influence component selection, 2205 duplex stainless steel bar offers an alternative to common austenitic grades. It is considered for pump shafts, valve components and process-equipment parts working under demanding conditions.

For a loaded shaft exposed to corrosive fluid, selecting 2205 may address two requirements together. However, higher strength does not automatically justify a smaller section, and the material can require more demanding machining than familiar austenitic stock. Component design and processing cost should be evaluated together.

The commercial name 2205 also needs clarification on the order. Specify UNS S31803 or S32205, or verified dual certification where required. Delivery condition and project-specific testing should be agreed rather than assumed from a duplex label.

More Details

Strength and Corrosion Resistancer

2205 is used for pump shafts, valve stems and other components carrying loads in corrosive conditions. It offers higher strength than 304 or 316, together with better chloride corrosion resistance in many environments.

For a shaft that keeps failing in service, this combination may be more useful than choosing a grade for corrosion resistance alone.

Higher strength does not automatically allow a smaller diameter. Shaft stiffness, deflection and existing bearing fits may still require the original dimensions.

Confirm Which 2205 Is Required

2205 is commonly associated with UNS S31803 and S32205. Their composition requirements differ.

If your project specifies S32205, the supplied material needs certification to that designation. Dual-certified material is suitable only when it meets both requirements.

Including the exact UNS designation in the enquiry gives us a clearer basis for sourcing and quoting.
