A2 is a practical choice for punches, trimming dies and cutters that face repeated wear and some impact. Compared with D2, it generally offers more toughness but less wear resistance.
This balance matters when a tool breaks before it wears out. A more wear-resistant grade may offer little benefit if the edge keeps chipping.
At Dexter Steel, we consider the material being worked and the reason for replacement when reviewing an A2 enquiry.
Prepare for Hardening and Final Grinding
A2 is air hardened, which can help limit shape changes during heat treatment. Accurate tools still need allowance for final grinding.
Annealed stock is easier to machine before hardening. We can supply cut blanks and review holes or other specified processing from your drawing.
For a punch that must fit closely into a die, finishing allowance deserves attention. A blank close to the required size saves machining, but it must leave enough material to achieve the final fit.
