O1 is used for gauges, punches, small dies and cutting tools. It is relatively easy to machine in the annealed condition and can be hardened for use.
For simple tools or short production runs, it can offer a workable balance of material cost and manufacturing effort. Its value is strongest where suitable oil-hardening facilities are available.
If heat treatment is outsourced, that cost and lead time belong in the buying decision too.
Leave Room to Finish the Tool
Oil hardening can change a tool’s shape or dimensions. Accurate surfaces often need grinding afterward.
Simple shapes are generally easier to manage through this process. Complex tools with tight tolerances may benefit from an air-hardening grade such as A2.
At Dexter Steel, we can supply O1 cut blanks and review specified drilling or other processing. The aim is to reduce work in your shop while leaving enough material for final correction and finishing.
