Cold Drawn Steel Bar

For repeat machining, cold drawn steel bar offers closer dimensions and a smoother surface than ordinary hot-rolled stock. It is often selected for pins, shafts, fittings and parts fed through automatic machines.

Consistent starting size can reduce material removal and help keep production predictable. Cold drawing also changes the steel’s strength and hardness, so the supplied condition matters when a part will be bent, welded or heat treated. Long parts or heavy machining may require particular attention to straightness and movement during processing.

Dexter Steel can quote cold-drawn bar to the required grade, size and tolerance. Cut lengths can simplify handling, while suitable machining allowance helps avoid paying for precision that the production route will remove anyway.

More Details

For automatic machining, the bar must suit the feeder as well as the finished part. Diameter tolerance alone does not cover every feeding requirement.

DetailProduction relevance
Bar lengthCompatibility with the feeder
StraightnessReliable feeding and rotation

Size toleranceConsistent starting dimensions

Dexter Steel can review these requirements against your purchasing specification. Agreed limits are more useful than a general request for “precision bar.”

Match the Condition to Later Operations

Cold-drawn stock is not always interchangeable with annealed material of the same grade. The difference can affect forming effort and movement during machining.

For parts requiring substantial bending or heavy removal on one side, the delivery condition deserves attention. These operations may reduce the benefit of buying closely sized stock.

We can quote full bars or cut blanks. The choice should fit your machine setup and batch size, with enough allowance left for the surfaces you will finish.
