M2 is widely used for drills, taps, reamers and milling cutters. It offers a useful balance of wear resistance, toughness and cost for many everyday cutting jobs.
For a manufacturer producing standard tools, using M2 where it performs well keeps material spending under control. A higher-cost cobalt grade is more useful when cutting heat is clearly shortening tool life.
At Dexter Steel, the material being cut and the reason for tool replacement help us understand whether M2 remains the practical choice.
Keep Blank Costs Under Control
In repeat production, a little excess material on every blank adds up. A suitable bar diameter can reduce turning and grinding, while cut lengths can save workshop handling.
The supply details should match your process:
- Annealed stock for machining before hardening.
- A defined surface condition so removal allowances are clear.
- Enough extra material for heat treatment and final grinding.
We can review cut sizes against your tool drawing. Accurate starting dimensions are useful, but they do not replace the heat treatment and finishing needed to produce a working cutter.
