Spring steel can be supplied for forming, machining or use after further heat treatment. These orders need different supply conditions.
Softer stock is easier to bend and machine. Hardened stock needs more care during processing. At Dexter Steel, we confirm what work you will do before quoting the material.
Round bar can suit coil springs and torsion parts. Flat bar can suit leaf springs and flat spring parts. The required shape and size should follow your drawing.
Cutting and Hole Work Before Hardening
We can quote cut lengths, drilling and slotting to reduce work in your shop. These operations are usually easier before the steel is hardened.
For spring parts, the worked edges matter. Burrs and sharp marks can become places where cracks start. Your drawing should show any edge rounding or deburring required.
The supplied blank also needs to suit later forming. A straight cut length is not always the same as the finished spring length.
Keep Repeat Orders the Same
Changing the bar thickness or supply condition can affect how a spring is made and how it works. For repeat production, keep the approved grade, size and condition on the order.
If you want to change grades, send us the current specification. We can review the supply options, but the new material may need a production trial before regular use.
Raw bar is not a finished spring. Final shaping, heat treatment and any load checks should be agreed separately.
