Gear Steel Bar

Gear steel bar supplies blanks for gears, pinions and other drivetrain components. The right material depends on tooth loading, component size and the planned hardening process. Many gears need a hard working surface with a tougher centre.

For production shops, the purchase also affects machining and finishing costs. A blank that leaves excessive stock adds removal time, while insufficient allowance can make correction after heat treatment difficult. Gear steels therefore need to be selected around the finished component and production sequence.

Dexter Steel can review grade, supply condition and cut-blank requirements as long as you request. Carburizing grades and through-hardening grades serve different needs, so the intended heat-treatment route should be clear before the material is ordered.

More Details

Dexter Steel can quote full bars for your shop to cut, or blanks cut to agreed lengths. Full bars suit orders with several part sizes. Cut blanks can save saw time on repeat jobs.

For gears with a large centre hole, compare the cost of removing that material with the cost of a hollow or forged blank. Bar stock is not always the lowest-cost starting point.

Define the Work Included in the Order

A cut blank and a finished gear are different products. The quotation should make clear how much work is completed before delivery.

We can review blank sizes and processing from your drawing. Gear cutting, heat treatment and final grinding should be listed separately if required.

For mixed orders, send the size and quantity of each blank. This gives us a clearer basis for pricing than a total weight alone.
